What is motion design?

Updated: Aug 23, 2024

What is motion design? I like to categorize it as graphic design with motion. Motion designers typically work in advertising but can be known to work with social media, apps, games, television, films, or really anywhere movement is required to connect with the audience. Motion designers can wear a variety of hats, from VFX to even stop-motion. Still, all of these roles require specific tools like understanding design principles such as layout, typography, and color theory and knowledge of the twelve principles of animation, including things like exaggeration, secondary action, and ease. The ability to think creatively is a must and comfort with communication it helps to bring your ideas across smoothly to the general public and fellow creatives.

Motion Designers work with animation, audio, and visual effects to create moving content and graphics for various media, such as television, the Internet, and film. Motion designers usually work with Adobe software using programs like After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator for 3D software; the go-to is Cinema4D.

How to become a motion designer?

Typical motion designers earn a bachelor's degree in motion design, animation, or graphic design, but there are other ways; you don't need a degree to start this career. Many online tutorials or classes can teach you everything you need to know without the cost of university tuition.

You want to build your portfolio of your best work; this allows you to show prospective employers and clients your talent and graphic skills. You can show your animation portfolio on a personal website or blog, and your resume should include a working link to your portfolio.

Many believe being the best animator is essential, but I feel the opposite. Yes, knowledge of animation is critical, but some of the best motion videos start with a fundamental understanding of design. If it's not appealing, the animation will always suffer, no matter how good it is.

Next steps.

Becoming a motion designer can be fulfilling. If you decide to take this path, the question is which form of study is best for you. I went to Ringling College of Art and Design for motion design when tutorials and online courses were less prevalent. I loved my university, my professors, and my classmates. But I spent a small fortune on something I could have easily learned online today. But making connections with a university experience is unmatched, not to mention the outstanding creative environment.

I recommend reaching out to some motion designers you love; we tend to be excited when someone asks about our work and our opinion on things; after all we all want to feel loved.
